3 Joint Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) for Close Air Support defines "CAS" as "air action by fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft against hostile targets that are in close proximity to friendly forces and which require detailed integration of each air mission with the fire and movement of those forces.
The session is run by the Ops O of the battalion; however, in attendance are the air mission planners, who will actually support the mission, the commanders of the AAVs, LCACs, LCUs and the naval staff who can answer questions about the position of the ships, sea state and other naval concerns.
B Flight, 6167th Operations Squadron eventually assumed the UW support missions of the Special Air Mission Detachment.
