Anchor light

1.(Naut.) The lantern shown at night by a vessel at anchor. International rules of the road require vessels at anchor to carry from sunset to sunrise a single white light forward if under 150 feet in length, and if longer, two such lights, one near the stern and one forward.

As we approached Lock 15 at Rock Island, IL, I asked for an opening of the railroad bridge because we could not clear it due to a permanently mounted anchor light atop the hard top.
To be effective, a sailboat anchor light should be hung in the fore triangle at a height just sufficient that it can be seen all around the horizon, usually only a bit higher than the boom.
Clearly the boat's builders had been thinking more in decorative than functional terms, but as time went on, the thing had become genuinely useful as a mount for the anchor light, the primary VHF, and the radar; in conjunction with the boom, it provided an extender for flopper-stoppers and a lift for people overboard.
