Flexography was first called aniline printing, because early flexographic inks contained dyes derived from aniline oil, a liquid extracted from the indigo plant.
Believing that not all samples of aniline oil worked consistently, Ziehl substituted phenol (carbolic acid) in its place.
At the nearby Diamond Rubber Company, chemists found in 1906 that aniline oil would speed curing and other compounds would make rubber more uniform, or improve it in other ways.
