Poliomyelitis is an enterovirus, appearing in 3 strains (types I, II, and III), that attacks the anterior horn cells, brain stem, and reticular activating system in people with the disease.
Patients with flaccid paralysis have perivascular lymphocytic infiltration in the spinal cord, microglial nodules, and loss of anterior horn cells (9).
The poliovirus infects the spinal cord anterior horn cells and other motor neuron cells.
