From a report published by Kowalski, Kenigsberg, Sinno, Krishnan and Khanal (2006), antiarrhythmic medications (AAM) are associated with an increase in cardiac mortality due to their proarrhythmic effects and, from a meta-analysis of 16,365 patients, AAM were also associated with an increase in non-cardiac mortality.
16,17) Today, antiarrhythmic medications are reserved for dangerous and usually life-threatening rhythms.
If heart palpitations become severe, antiarrhythmic medication can be injected intravenously.
