A malignant tumor of nervous tissue composed of astrocytes.

They located changes in the IDH1 gene in more than 70 percent of three common types of gliomas: low-grade astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, and secondary glioblastomas.
People with close relatives who contracted astrocytomas -- a less aggressive grade of glioblastomas -- were nearly four times more likely to develop the same type of tumor, compared with people whose close relatives did not contract any brain cancer.
Unfortunately, it is the most common form of brain tumor in adults, accounting for 67% of all astrocytomas.
