A contagious fungal skin infection caused by a species of Trichophyton or Epidermophyton that usually affects the feet, especially the skin between the toes, and is characterized by itching, blisters, cracking, and scaling; ringworm of the foot. Also called tinea pedis.

When the anthropophile fungi start growing on the moist dead skin on your feet, you have athlete's foot or tinea pedis.
Unless you have a condition such as athlete's foot and you're careful about hygiene, I don't think there's a problem.
Initially we thought it might be athlete's foot as he spends a lot of time in trainers and playing sport, but even the most potent creams have not cleared it.
