The shortest ever pulse of light, just 80 attoseconds (billionths of a billionth of a second) long, was created in June 2008.
The topics covered here include fundamental plasma processes in ultra-intense fields, relativistic nonlinear optics, lasers for ultra-high intensity plasma physics and other applications, laser-based ion acceleration and future applications, laser-based electron acceleration, laboratory astrophysics with intense lasers, attoseconds and fundamental atomic physics processes, coherent and incoherent x-rays from laser-plasmas and applications, and plasma applications and diagnostics.
The selected awards include a multimodality spectroscope for nanoscale optical imaging the structure of peptides, proteins, and viruses in their native environment; remote nondestructive testing and measurement of power systems for isolating and diagnosing failures in the power grid; and laser instrumentation for attosecond experimentation to probe the fast electron dynamics in electronic devices.
