| Kidjo's first couple of records were buoyed by big, partying backbeats and the kind of lulling grooves you'd hear seeping from expensive headphones in the international-departures lounge. It is an incredible development, the use of computerized electronic instruments to create polyrhythms - and not just simple backbeats, but complex cross-rhythms of "found" (sampled) and "created" (programmed) sounds, creatively patched together like an aural quilt of musical scraps turned into a magic carpet of head-bopping motion. Here you can hear birds chirping, insects buzzing, rainwater dripping and trickling off the ferns, and snatches of voices conversing as they move from the background through the foreground of danceable grooves and backbeats laced with yodels and chants. |
