LONG BEACH -- Although she was a three-time NCAA swimming champion in the women's 100- and 200-yard backstrokes and 100 butterfly, Natalie Coughlin made the 100 freestyle her personal showcase during her career at California, besting the American short-course record three times.
The JCs: Pierce College's Alexandra Rogers won the 50-and 100-meter backstrokes at the state swimming championships, and Jessica Chen finished second in the 100 freestyle.
Criste's decision to not swim in either breaststroke event gives Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta's James Martin - from California Aquatics - a legitimate chance to win four events, including the 100 and 200 backstrokes.
