The Barleys have been partners since 1993 in Star Rock Farms, comprising about 10,000 acres of crops in addition to dairy, beef, hog and egg production in southern Lancaster County, Pa.
Winter barleys are planted in northwestern states in October and harvested in mid-July, compared with typical spring varieties planted in May and harvested in April.
He learned that the barleys for premium beers have been selected for flavor rather than germination rate and that some of the seeds are temperamental.
