bathometer  (b-thm-tr)
An instrument that is used to measure water depth without the use of a sounding line. The bathometer does not require a line to extend to the bottom because it measures the difference in the gravitational effect of the water surface and of solid ground.

Using a high-resolution sonar bathometer called Sea Beam and other devices, researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle and the Woods Hole (Mass.
In an effort to survey this neew frontier, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been mapping the EEZ floor both with Sea Beam, a high-resolution bathometer that measures water depth, and with extremely precise navigation systems.
