According to the United States Lifesaving Association, rip currents are responsible for more than one hundred deaths on US beaches each year, and if they persist long enough, they can cause beach erosion.
A report, compiled by North Tyneside Council, also says there may be damage to coastal property and the fabric of buildings, including historic structures, cliff and beach erosion is likely to rise, and the costs of maintaining sea defences could increase.
