| Brooks says eating disorders involve not just binging or starving but, as in Wheeler's case, obsession: "Besides anorexia and bulimia, eating disorders or body image problems can take the form of intense preoccupation with weight and appearance, purging or obsessive dieting, and changes in social functioning. From my vast experience with comfort food, I suggest binging on five pints of tapioca topped with cinnamon and brown sugar, seven slices of American cheese and a half dozen frozen Snickers bars, all washed down with a strawberry shake. Both anorexia and bulimia can (and often do) involve binging and purging and are characterized by an intense dislike of one's own body, a fear of becoming fat, and a wide range of intense, distressing emotions. |
