valve [vælv] n 1. (Engineering / Mechanical Engineering) any device that shuts off, starts, regulates, or controls the flow of a fluid 2. (Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Anatomy) Anatomy a flaplike structure in a hollow organ, such as the heart, that controls the one-way passage of fluid through that organ 3. (Electronics) Also called tube vacuum tube an evacuated electron tube containing a cathode, anode, and, usually, one or more additional control electrodes. | Bioprosthetic valves have a higher rate of structural degeneration than homografts. Bioprosthetic valves, however, do not routinely require long-term anticoagulation unless there has been a documented cardioembolic event. Many of these patients will require re-operation within the next decade due to calcification of their bioprosthetic valve or due to failure of their mechanical valve implants. |
