Some veterans who received prostate biopsies between 1997 and 2001 at Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities in 11 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico may have been treated with improperly disinfected instruments, according to VA officials.
To determine whether tissue is cancerous, oncologists now have to take biopsies of tissue sand subject them to various laboratory tests--a process that can take days or more.
Follow-up biopsies showed reductions in perivascular mononuclear infiltrate in the superficial dermis (41% decrease in prevalence), perivascular fibrosis in the deep dermis (58% decrease), and periadnexal mononuclear infiltrate (53% decrease).
