n. Ecclesiastical
A stiff square cap with three or four ridges across the crown. Birettas are worn especially by Roman Catholic clergy and are black for priests, purple for bishops, and red for cardinals.

We know that birettas and fiddle-back chasubles, mumbled (and often mangled) Latin, and truly execrable renditions of Gregorian chant were no more aesthetically than theologically impressive.
Only the Pope has that unwavering authority, as we know from the Vatican Council's Pastor aeternus of July 18, 1870, decades before art historians gained their cardinal birettas in Benin art.
I just saw a photo of three newly ordained young men wearing birettas and cassocks -- in 1997
