1. The common North American bear (Euarctos or Ursus americanus) that lives in forests, is omnivorous, and has a glossy black or dark brown coat.
2. Any of several black or dark brown Asiatic bears, especially Selenarctos thibetanus, with a pointed snout, a black coat, and a white, V-shaped mark on the chest.
