A protein present in cow's milk, as well as in human breast milk, stimulates bone-forming cells in lab dishes and induces bone growth when injected into mice, researchers have found. RhBMP-2 is a naturally occurring protein that results in the formation of new bone when implanted in specific, targeted areas in the spine by causing cells to differentiate into bone-forming cells. They adorned the scaffolding with synthetic peptides, or protein fragments, that help bone-forming cells called osteoprogenitor cells adhere to the framework. |
