Some 173 travellers were hurried off the Airbus A320 plane without their cabin baggage when flames broke out after the journey from Brisbane to Newcastle, north of Sydney, late on Tuesday.
The undeclared US$150,000 was found in cabin baggage, while the Chinese national indicated only $1,600 in his customs declaration.
Liquids, gels and aerosols are only allowed in individual containers of 100ml in cabin baggage.
