According to official documents at the SADC Secretariat, headquartered in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, since its inception SADC has inculcated a sense of regional belonging as well as a tradition of consultation among the peoples and governments of Southern Africa, which, among other things, has improved regional security.
A new secretariat building is under construction in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, to be completed in mid-2009.
