Four of these patients had a carotid body tumor, 2 had a glomus tympanicum tumor, and 3 had a glomus vagale tumor (table).
Carotid body tumor (CBT), first described by von Luschka, 1862 is a rare lesion of the neuroendocrine system.
Other diagnoses to consider when presented with a lateral neck mass include but are not limited to thyroglossal duct cyst, cystic hygroma, lymphadenopathy, lipoma, hemangioma, lymphoma, dermoid tumor, and carotid body tumor.
