n.1.(Antiq.) A species of divination, which was performed by letting down a mirror into water, for a sick person to look at his face in it. If his countenance appeared distorted and ghastly, it was an ill omen; if fresh and healthy, it was favorable.

a form of divination involving a crystal ball or mirrors.

While in catoptromancy visions can be seen that do not involve the agency of angels or other spirits, all known examples of crystallomancy do include the appearance of divine assistants such as Dee's angels.
