1. An edible mushroom (Cantharellus cibarius) that is yellow to orange in color, trumpet-shaped, and sometimes fragrant.
2. Any of various similar or related mushrooms of the genera Cantharellus, Polyozellus, and Gomphus, several of which are inedible or poisonous.

But what I've heard, as we've poked around the forests coming up pretty much empty-handed, were stories about these vast stores of chanterelles that pop from the ground in amazing abundance during mushroom hunting season.
Chanterelles grow only in the wild and attempts to grow them commercially in America and elsewhere have failed.
Chanterelles have an apricot aroma and can be found in parts of Scotland.
