Hoxby sees in the 1671 closet drama Samson Agonistes Milton's "antagonism toward the discourse of work, building, and production" (228) used to support the regime's imperial-commercial project.
While less radical in its gender politics than Bell in Campo, The Sociable Companions abandons the lengthy orations and expository gentlemen of the earlier closet drama in favor of the plot intrigues and rapid-fire dialogue typical of Restoration comedy.
More importantly, it is the first attempt to offer a coherent account of closet drama as a counter-tradition to the commercial stage.
