Cochin China 1
A region of southern Indochina including the rich delta area of the Mekong River. Originally a part of the Khmer Empire, it fell to the Annamese in the 18th century and to the French in the 19th century. The region forms the southern part of present-day Vietnam.

In 1887, it combines Cochin China, northern Vietnam (called Tonkin), central Vietnam (Annam), and Cambodia to form the Indochinese Union.
Burchard had been doing missionary work in Asia Minor or Cochin China.
Sar Desai provides only a sketchy account of the French role in Cochin China, which began with Jesuit missionaries in 1615 and concluded in 1887 with the annexation of the Indochina Union under a French governor in Hanoi.
