In 1887, it combines Cochin China, northern Vietnam (called Tonkin), central Vietnam (Annam), and Cambodia to form the Indochinese Union. Burchard had been doing missionary work in Asia Minor or Cochin China. Sar Desai provides only a sketchy account of the French role in Cochin China, which began with Jesuit missionaries in 1615 and concluded in 1887 with the annexation of the Indochina Union under a French governor in Hanoi. |
