n.
1. A temporary watertight enclosure that is pumped dry to expose the bottom of a body of water so that construction, as of piers, may be undertaken.
2. A watertight chamber attached to the side of a ship to facilitate repairs below the water line.

Booms and oil skimmers were being used to contain the spill, which was mostly concentrated in one narrow arm of the lake, and three cofferdams were built to prevent any more oil from pouring into the lake, officials said.
On June 20, DWR personnel, a crew from the California Conservation Corps, and crane operators from Teichert rescued 193 fish before completely draining the aqueduct section between temporary cofferdams.
Construction involves cofferdams, drilled shaft foundations, cast in place substructure and piers, high strength structural steel plate girders and cast in place concrete deck with an asphalt riding surface.
