combat service support element

The core element of a Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF) that is task-organized to provide the combat service support necessary to accomplish the MAGTF mission. The combat service support element varies in size from a small detachment to one or more force service support groups. It provides supply, maintenance, transportation, general engineering, health services, and a variety of other services to the MAGTF. The combat service support element itself is not a formal command. Also called CSSE. The largest Combat Service Support Element is the Force Service Support Group.
In addition to the ACE, a command element, ground combat element (GCE) and combat service support element (CSSE) comprise the MEU, which embarks three ships of a Navy amphibious ready group (ARG) under the command of an amphibious squadron.
A typical MAGTF is composed of a command element (CE), a GCE, an aviation combat element (ACE) and a combat service support element (CSSE) and ranges in size and capability.
