Babies born with this condition, severe combined immunodeficiency, typically receive a bone marrow transplant from a donor.
Both fetuses were found to have a condition known as severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID), in which the fetal immune system does not develop enough of certain infection-fighting cells known as T-cells, according to Evans.
These disorders encompass more than 100 diseases, including common variable immunodeficiency, X-linked agammaglobulinemia, and severe combined immunodeficiency.
