Following the beacon-like line of the canopy you move past a succession of randomly dislocated volumes interspersed with fragments of leftover space - on one side, the curiously concertinaed boxes of the music museum (now being fitted out by Franck Hammoutene), on the other, a low slung cafe in the tapering tip. Behind a partition of galvanised steel are lavatories: coloured cubicles behind concertinaed walls of prefabricated metal sheet and a communal fountain. An external wall composed of alternating glass and opaque panels has been concertinaed to allow tantalising glimpses of the interior from the street; similar angling of box-office windows is designed to encourage queues to form naturally along the length of the long, thin lobby. |
