con·sen·sus  (kn-snss)
n.
1. An opinion or position reached by a group as a whole: "Among political women . . . there is a clear consensus about the problems women candidates have traditionally faced" (Wendy Kaminer). See Usage Note at redundancy.
2. General agreement or accord: government by consensus.

[Latin cnsnsus, from past participle of cnsentre, to agree; see consent.]

consensus
Noun
general or widespread agreement [Latin consentire to agree]
USAGE: Since consensus refers to a collective opinion, the words of opinion in the phrase consensus of opinion are redundant and should therefore be avoided.

Noun1.consensus - agreement in the judgment or opinion reached by a group as a whole; "the lack of consensus reflected differences in theoretical positions"; "those rights and obligations are based on an unstated consensus"
accord, agreement - harmony of people's opinions or actions or characters; "the two parties were in agreement"

consensus
noun agreement, general agreement, unanimity, common consent, unity, harmony, assent, concord, concurrence, kotahitanga N.Z.
USAGE The original meaning of the word consensus is a collective opinion. Because the concept of `opinion' is contained within this word, a few people argue that the phrase a consensus of opinion is incorrect and should be avoided. However, this common use of the word is unlikely to jar with the majority of speakers.
