cosmic ray
n.
A stream of ionizing radiation of extraterrestrial origin, consisting chiefly of protons, alpha particles, and other atomic nuclei but including some high-energy electrons, that enters the atmosphere, collides with atomic nuclei, and produces secondary radiation, principally pions, muons, electrons, and gamma rays.

cosmic ray
A ray of radiation of extraterrestrial origin, consisting of one or more charged particles such as protons, alpha particles, and larger atomic nuclei. Cosmic rays entering the atmosphere collide with atoms, producing secondary radiation, such as pions, muons, electrons, and gamma rays. Tokyo, Japan, Jan 12, 2007 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has won an order from the Kamioka Observatory of the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR) of the University of Tokyo in an open tendering, to supply a new data analysis system that analyzes the structure of outer space by utilizing a cosmic-particle observation detector known as Super-Kamiokande.
It's confusing to state that accelerating charged particles to high speeds "therefore" produces cosmic rays.
In the sun-driven alternative, it may be the cosmic ray flux (CRF), energetic particles that hit the atmosphere, potentially generating cloud condensation nuclei (CCN).
