A new departure in the employment of artillery was its deep echelonment in important sectors, the planning of its counterpreparation fire well in advance, the creation of strong artillery antitank reserves, strong artillery groups in support of the infantry and long range artillery groups in armies and divisions defending in main sectors.
A substantial role in enhancing the effectiveness of tactical defense was played by counterpreparation fire, which at the initial period of the war began to be used also on the tactical level.
