The Washington Post recently reported that contrary to conventional wisdom, the Big Apple's violent crime rate dropped dramatically during the last 15 years even as the city emptied its jail cells.
The decreasing crime rate in the city is the result of cooperation involving the police, the community and city officials, Livingstone said.
Despite increases in serious crimes such as homicide, attempted murder, serious assaults and robbery, Canada's national crime rate in 2005 fell 5%, the Centre for Justice Statistics reports.
