Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk who began studying common garden peas in the mid-1800s with the intention of cross-fertilizing them to observe their traits and to create hybrids, is credited with being the father of genetics. Bringing into conversation scholars from native studies, anthropology, history, sociology, natural science, and archaeology, the volume becomes a wide-ranging and cross-fertilizing analysis of some of the most persistent issues facing studies of the colonial project in the New World, particularly to what extent we can construct "a multicultural history in tune with both [indigenous] and Euro-Canadian perceptions of history" (Morantz, 64). It is not unreasonable to expect that, over time, those two will evolve to where both will begin cross-fertilizing. |
