crystal system n (Chemistry) Crystallog any of six, or sometimes seven, classifications of crystals depending on their symmetry. The classes are cubic, tetragonal, hexagonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, and triclinic. Sometimes an additional system, trigonal, is distinguished, although this is usually included in the hexagonal system See also crystal class How to thank TFD for its existence? | Likewise, although Crystal Data Determinative Ratios [5] may be used to locate similar lattices within a given crystal system, the normalized reduced cell provides the logical basis for a far more powerful and comprehensive lattice-matching technique which is crystal system independent and conceptually parallel to techniques based on matching reduced cells. The isolates were identified to the species level using the BBL Crystal System (Becton Dickinson, Sparks, MD). In such cases, the compound is often reported in a crystal system of too low symmetry. |
