Boluses of crystalloid solution assist in maintaining circulating blood volume, increased renal perfusion and flushing myoglobin through the renal tubules.
Maneuvers to achieve this include infusing crystalloid solution and blood through a warming device, covering the patient's head with a turban or warming device, covering body parts out of the operative field with a warming device, irrigating nasogastric and thoracostomy tubes with warm saline during laparotomy, and irrigating the open pericardial, pleural, or peritoneal cavity during sternotomy, thoracotomy, or laparotomy.
