The mining company fostered competition between cuadrillas (work groups) and offered prizes and bonuses to the groups with the highest production. In keeping with Spanish colonial practices everywhere, the caravans were strictly regulated, usually consisting of thirty-two mule-drawn wagons divided into two sections - cuadrillas - of sixteen wagons each. His training in the art of bullfighting was deliberately slow: having made a name for himself at the rank of novillero, he chose to work in the cuadrillas (the matador's crew or team) of Juan Belmonte and Rafael Gomez Ortega (el Gallo) instead of moving on quickly to the final rank. |
