Cuckolds, who had been universally perceived as objects of ridicule and the butt of stage humor, became objects of sympathy who now had recourse at law. It may be that the husband's real interest was avoidance of a legal charge of pandering, as prescribed in the lex Julia for cuckolds who failed to charge their wives with adultery. Instead of being seen as sympathetic characters, enmeshed in society's rigid web, Juliet's parents are culpable: Lord Capulet (Douglas Martin) is physically abusive to his daughter and wife, and Lady Capulet (Molly Daly) openly cuckolds him with Tybalt (Stuart Loungway). |
