The Cuckoo flower was chosen as the County flower by the conservation charity Plantlife in 2002.
As I went along through the stunted remains of the hilltop plantation, the ground got damper and soon I was admiring sparse colonies of lady's smock (or cuckoo flower in these parts of Peakland); and dancing around them, as if treading air to maintain position, were a dozen or more green-veined white butterflies.
As a result of their efforts, Herdship Farm is now a haven for rare farmland birds such as lapwing, snipe, curlew, redshank, black grouse and yellow wagtail, and rare plants, including globe flower, melancholy thistle, cuckoo flower and the Teesdale gentian, flourish there.
