Well-written, the novel is a little too cutesy for this reviewer when it comes to Lee's personal life. Secondary characters such as the Cutesy Dell Twins, the Manley Boys, and Eddie Wax, whose dumb devotion to his dead horse Stumpy is both trite and curiously ennobling, add to the fizz but also inject a note of melancholy into the proceedings. Belladonna's right panel offers a casual commentary, in jazzy multicolored typescripts, on the haphazard evolution of its left panel's muddle of imagery (it includes three cutesy kittens and a crudely "expressionistic" painting of a knife-thrower's assistant). |
