At school the cycle sheds were converted into air raid shelters but at first some lessons were conducted in teachers' homes.
He said: "In my school, pop music was a dirty word, in rebellion we had to go and play our guitars behind the cycle sheds.
We have a cycle centre in the bus station which the council and Environment City run to help encourage cycling and at the town hall there is a large cycle shed for council employees," he said.
