The philosopher and mathematician d'Alembert put the problem most concisely when he defined architecture as the "embellished mask of our greatest need," which meant that to the philosophic eye architecture was little more than the aesthetic or "rhetorical" supplement to shelter. Most of the class before me were infidels, and called each other Voltaire, Rousseau, D'Alembert, etc. In Letter to D'Alembert, he called for the creation of a government-run Court of Honor to be charged with approving or disapproving of individual actions whenever a suit was brought. |
