The dancegoing public may be hazy about their attainments, but the leaders of the American dance community know a couple of prime movers when they see them, and the official recognition comes this year.
But I can only hope that the simplistic ideas and thin choreographic invention of Free Radicals give little idea of what the range of Australian contemporary dance actually offers -- and still less of what the dancegoing public, anywhere, might actually want.
At the recent meeting of the National Task Force on Dance Audiences, it was generally agreed that changing or compromising the art form was not on the table, that the mission of audience building for dance should, focus on audience education, marketing, and nurturing valued relationships with the dancegoing public.
