| Eventually the state relaxed its grip on peasant lives as village land was decollectivized in the 1980s, but not before it had dealt heavy blows against the Confucian foundations of the patriarchal family. On the one hand, the local economy has been decollectivized, and political control as well as ideolog ical coercion have been relaxed to varying degrees. His work is informed by that of other scholars and makes an important contribution toward understanding village life not only as simply decollectivized and household-based but as highly structured along complex lines in which the village is the corporate owner of diverse enterprises, a significant administrative unit and a nexus of dense kinship ties. |
