1. To appoint or authorize as an agent or a representative.
2. To assign (authority or duties) to another; delegate.

[Middle English deputen, from Old French deputer, from Late Latin dputre, to allot, from Latin, to consider : d-, de- + putre, to ponder; see pau-2 in Indo-European roots.]
