The Mediterranean Diet Pyramid guidelines endorse heavy consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains; olive oil as the principle fat; lean red meat consumed only a few times per month or somewhat more often in very small portions; low to moderate consumption of other foods from animal sources such as dairy products (especially cheese and yogurt), fish and poultry; and moderates consumption of wine (primarily at meals). Their Asian Diet Pyramid is patterned on the plant-based diets of China, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines and India, countries long known to be relatively free of the heart disease, obesity and cancers that plague Americans. |
