I vividly remember, when I was writing Dogsbody, being a dog a lot of the time, wanting to scratch under my collar or raise a leg to deal with an itch behind my left ear--I've felt itchy ever since really--and living through that lovely multiple stretch that dogs do, tail and back legs first, then up the back through to the front legs.
IN THE WINTER of 1962-63, by now in my mid-twenties, I was appointed assistant courier and general dogsbody to Selwyn Lloyd, until recently our Chancellor of the Exchequer.
She did the Harry Potter thing long ago in the Chrestomanci books, and has written many others, including The Ogre Downstairs, in which the children grow a hilarious crop of ancient Greek warriors; Dogsbody, featuring Sirius the Dog Star in canine form; The Homeward Bounders, a subtle riff on time travel; and, for older readers, Fire and Hemlock, an intense version of the Tam Lin legend.
