| In the 1960s, theorists succeeded in reuniting the electromagnetic and weak forces into the so-called electroweak force. The method also helps physicists construct so-called grand unified theories, which attempt to unify the electroweak force with the strong force that binds particles within the nucleus. For example, so-called supersymmetric theories, which permit the unification of the strong and electroweak forces, posit the existence of partners for each of the matter-making fermions (leptons and quarks) and force-carrying bosons of the standard model. |
