In addition to the non-cytotoxic drug compound zotarolimus, which is fully eluted into the vessel wall at 28 days, the Endeavor stent also uses a proven, non-inflammatory phosphorylcholine (PC) polymer. The results of this recently completed study indicate this coating may be safely used as a drug-eluting platform since it may be expected from the present study that the Hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating will remain inert in the arterial wall even long after the drug is completely eluted. This reduces the problem - common in other drug-eluting solutions -- of over-delivery of eluted medicines (so-called "drug burst" immediately after implantation. |
